Best Practices For Effective Surveys

  1. Write your questions and response options in a clear and concise manner - your questions should only pertain to the survey topic in order, so only the most important information is collected!

  2. Avoid leading questions, instead use neutral language to avoid biased answers.

Example of what NOT to do (i.e., a leading question):

  1. Avoid double-barreled questions - a question that includes more than one topic, and is asking about two different issues, while only allowing a single answer.

Example of what NOT to do (i.e., a double-barreled question):

  1. If you choose “Rating” as your response option, please state how many stars the question is out of. The maximum star rating you can select for the range is 10 stars. This is essential because by default, the number of stars is not explicitly stated in the question.

Example of our best practice for Ratings:

NOTE: This is strictly an example, you do not have to copy the exact wording.

  1. Select an appropriate type of response (star, multiple choice etc.) for the question you are asking.

  1. Ensure each question is marked as “required” or “not required”.

Questions that are not marked as required, allows members to skip questions.
